epilogue part 1
time really flies. it's the eve of chinese new year once again and that means that the temporary merchandising job at sheng siong under lam soon that i have been working for the past few months has officially ended.
well, what i can say about my job is that it's some kind of bitter-sweet job. it's bitter in a way that for 2 months (nov - jan) i had to follow a full time merchandiser (auntie) all the way and i wasnt able to make friends. and that auntie whom i had to follow was a total bitch. she was totally unreasonable in a way that she finds it alright to be 2 hours late herself and if i was 5 minutes late, she would screw me upside down. once, she even threatened to sack me for the fact that i did not display everything on the shelf (for goodness sake those sheng siong staff dont allow that).
working as a temporary merchandiser also meant that i had the chance to leave early if my job of the day has been accomplished. it is interesting that u get paid approximately $10/hr for an easy day's job. (: yes, that's the sweet part of my job. and i enjoyed wednesdays most since i got the chance to work with yiting and we got the chance to whine to each other about the job (we can't possibly whine our unhappiness to those aunties)
and for the past 10 days, i had been working as a promoter for drinks... at bedok 539 and 739, and also at mcnair. i enjoyed very much the fact that i had made new friends at those places and also being able to interact with those customers. it has been an enriching experience for me indeed.
day 1 (saturday, 26/1/2008)
the first day as a promoter for drinho at bedok 539. my mentality then was "how to sell such low-profile drinks?". this seemed to be an uphill task for me, since the price of pokka drinks dipped to $6.50/carton, 10 cents lower than my drinks. was kinda sad when i reached there, because there isnt anything much for me to do. in the end, i helped the staff to send drinks to the nearest kopitiam and the customers to carry the goods they intended to buy (non-drinho drinks eg. yeos) had a good chat with those promoters there until...
i got a message by my boss asking me to go to 739 bedok instead to promote drinks. 739 bedok seemed alien to me, because i wasn't there for at least 3 weeks. but nevertheless, i just carried on with my work, wearing a brave smile on my face in front of the people there. some people may think that i am crazy because i seemed to be working happily, but in actual fact i am just trying to curb my shyness and also to appear confident in promoting my drinks. 400 cartons of them. made friends with wenjie (marigold) and henry (yhs) who are both promoters at 739 bedok. wenjie seemed to be one introvert judging from my first impression of him because he doesnt seem to be one who actively engages in conversations. henry was busily helping his supervisor to pack the goods on that day that i didn't manage to interact with him much. of yes, there's another promoter (pokka) but she is always MIA.
day 2 ( sunday, 27/1/2008)
working at 739 bedok again this time. but now there's one new promoter for tiger - caroline. didnt talk to her at all that day but the supervisor of yhs kept discussing with wenjie, henry and me about her age LOL. nothing
day 3 (monday, 28/1/2008)
worked at 739 only after having dinner with wenjie (i have to stick to auntie as usual on weekdays -.-) and on that day, a new pokka promoter was present - rafiq. wenjie mentioned to me that rafiq seemed to be a joke of the day, because he didnt know what to do ans asked the supervisor (ah cang) on what to do. and he refused to deliver goods for customers other than those who bought pokka drinks.
day 4 (tuesday, 29/1/2008)
the first day we (wenjie, henry and i) had dinner together! (: we had dinner at the kopitiam nearest to sheng siong and slacked. work wasnt that demanding that day and we went to 7-11 to have snacks after work before going home.
day 5 (wednesday, 30/1/2008)
second day when the 3 of us had dinner together. work seemed to be more demanding due to the increase in the number of shoppers. and that day was also interesting in a way that henry and i helped to deliver goods for a customer all the way to his doorsteps at a block behind damai sec. that uncle talked to us a lot about social issues and politics which are worth listening and in fact, very true. and he keeps saying that how he wished his son is as hardworking as us. LOL.
day 6 (thursday, 31/1/2008)
well. unfortunately this time round the 3 of us couldnt have dinner together - because of a new female promoter from fruit tree - zann. heard from wenjie that ah cang did stunt this time by flipping a coin and ask them whether they take heads or tails to decide who to have dinner first. and in the end henry had dinner with me while wenjie had to accompany zann for dinner. at that time we were teasing wenjie because he act damn zuai lol. at night, that uncle whom we helped him to deliver his goods visited us again and we chatted a little with him (: and there was also one time when i was caught by blackie (he's a SS staff who looks like inidan but speaks chinese) at the 6th floor slacking and ever since that day, he kept marking me down and told me to send goods to the 6th floor -.- after work the 3 of us invited zann to slack but too bad she wasnt free. and so we went to the pier and ate our snacks before going home.
day 7 (friday, 1/2/2008)
a no-life day for me, having been busy at the outlet since 12 noon at bedok 739. weather was extremely bad because rain poured in for almost the whole day. there was a significant dip in the number of customers on that day.
however, this day proved a very significant one because it was the very first time we had dinner together again - but this time round we hid behind the stocks and facing the main road to have our dinner. ordered takeaways from the western stall and it took half an hour just to prepare our food. (should i say that the vendors put in effort to cook? lol) despite being stared at by the public, we continued to eat outdoors. sadly that was the only time the 3 of us could eat our dinner in this manner. and as usual at night we had some light snacks somewhere nearby
ondeh ondeh
day 8 (saturday, 2/2/2008)
went back to 539 bedok and exchanged greetings with those promoters. then went back to 739. well, that day was a record feat for me, having delivered goods simultaneously for 8 times (claps) and it was rather tiring. and there was a couple of times when the 3 of us had to deliver goods together. and that yhs supervisor didnt help and instead went for a haircut -.- having dinner together was another problem this time, and ah cang did something fanciful again - we had to guess what he was holding in his hand to see who shall have dinner later. a key, a coin or a cardboard. wenjie chose key, henry chose cardboard and i chose cardboard. in the end ah cang whipped out the key and wenjie had to have dinner with the yhs supervisor. zzz. and that particular day was a bad day for me because we ended our job at 12 midnight and i had to walk all the way home to amk -.- reached home at 2 plus in the end.
